Our Story

Creating a long term positive impact and championing transparency across the industry.

It’s our goal to operate in a way that contributes positively to national economies, takes a leading role in modernising the coloured gemstone sector and builds lasting, sustainable livelihoods for the communities surrounding our mines.

Our practices and policies have changed and improved over the years, and so has our structure. In 2017, we came under ownership of Pallinghurst Resources Limited, which subsequently changed its name to Gemfields Group.

Gemfields Group relisted on London’s AIM in February 2020 and also has a primary listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

Our passion for transparency, legitimacy and integrity shines through everything we do. So does our focus on the ‘big three’ coloured gemstones: rubies, emeralds and sapphires.

We have taken considerable strides in tailoring our portfolio to reflect this, identifying suitable sapphire opportunities in Africa to complement our thriving ruby and emerald operations. We’ve expanded our marketing activities to boost demand for coloured gemstones and maintain the  utmost operational transparency, too.

What We Do

Creating a long term positive impact and championing transparency across the industry.

It’s our goal to operate in a way that contributes positively to national economies, takes a leading role in modernising the coloured gemstone sector and builds lasting, sustainable livelihoods for the communities surrounding our mines.

Gemfields is the operator and 75% owner of both the Kagem emerald mine in Zambia (believed to be the world’s single largest producing emerald mine) and the Montepuez ruby mine in Mozambique (one of the most significant recently discovered ruby deposits in the world).

Responsible sourcing for us means implementing industry-leading policies and practices across operations, transparency in our auction sales process, an active role in working groups to modernise the sector, projects to improve health, education and livelihoods for the communities around our mines and conservation efforts (#conservationgemstones) to protect Africa’s great wildlife and biodiversity.

In our operation in Mozambique, we have also introduced a technologically advanced coloured gemstone sort house, with state-of-the-art optical sorting machines.

Our proprietary grading system,  pioneering auction platform and active marketing presence have all played a significant role in the rise of African gemstones.

As well as supplying the majority of the world’s rough rubies and emeralds, we work with international jewellery brands and other creative partners to raise the profile of African coloured gemstones through inspiring collaborations.

Our partnership with Fabergé – a Gemfields Group member and an iconic name with an exceptional heritage – allows us to do this through an array of beautiful creations.
